Soccer vs. East Central | 8/30/2023

WEST BURLINGTON - It was a hot day on the soccer pitch in Burlington as the Blackhawk women's soccer team fell 1-0 to the East Central College Falcons (ECC), and the men soared past East Central 3-1.

The Blackhawk women showed a major effort in the 90 minutes they had on the pitch Wednesday. Freshman goalkeeper Marlin Beltran had a very promising outing, recording 11 saves on 12 shots on goal. In the middle, Karlee Ballast, Jace Herman, and Isabel Bearnal connected on several nice attacks for the Blackhawks leading to shots on goal. However, East Central's goalkeeper collected all 3 of SCC's shots on goal. In the end, ECC's lone goal in the 32nd minute was too much for the Blackhawks to overcome. The Blackhawks will look to build on this outing when they play Scott Community College next Wednesday at home.

The SCC men flew past the ECC Falcons 3-1, after both teams scored in the first 5 minutes. Yellow cards became a constant in this game, as both sides showed aggressive attacks. SCC goalkeeper Kieran Innes recorded 4 saves through 90 minutes. Sophomore offensive specialist Foslyn Grant hammered in a header in the 2nd minute of the game thanks to an assist from Jose Luis Alvares. The lead was short lived as ECC came back scoring the equalizer off a connection from a free kick to an ECC player inside the box in the 4th minute. The two sides fought for a long stretch before SCC scored the eventual game-winner in the 58th minute courtesy of Cristobal Gutierrez. The lead grew in the 75th minute off an SCC free kick from Diego Lozano to Juan Lagares who connected with the back of the net. "We have improved as a team in every aspect. We still have a long way to go, but we are in the right track. Happy for the result and the way the boys played, now our focus is on Carl Sandburg on Saturday," states Head Coach Jorge Sierra. SCC moves to 2-1 on the season and will play Carl Sandburg this Saturday at 12:00PM.
