The 2017-18 season will be the induction year for the ICCAC's Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year Awards. The ICCAC's Awards Committee has narrowed down the field of the nominated male and female athletes to three.

 

 

 

The 2017-18 finalists for Male Student-Athlete of the Year are:

Akean Shackleford – Indian Hills – Soccer

 

The Warriors goal scoring phenomenon helped lead Indian Hills to an 18-3 record and their first-ever NJCAA Men's Soccer Championship tournament. He was the nation's second-leading scorer, tallying 33 goals and was second in points in the country with 71. The Jamaican was an NJCAA First-Team All-American selection.

 

Off the field, the ICCAC Men's Soccer Player of the Year was active in the Ottumwa community involving himself in Indian Hills' "Winning in the Community" initiative. He assisted with many projects including Toys for Tots and helped out at a number of area festivals including Ottumwa Octoberfest and Centerville's Pancake Day.

 

Justin Folley – Ellsworth – Wrestling

 

A two-time NJCAA Wrestling Coaches Association All-American, Folley was named the 2017-18 Ellsworth Community College Male Athlete of the Year. In 2018, he finished in 6^th place in the 133-pound weight-class at the National Tournament in Council Bluffs. During the season, he defeated eventual National Champion, Iowa Central's Todd Small.

 

Folley served as a resident assistant on campus volunteer hours and worked campus clean-up.

 

Chas Sagedahl – Southeastern – Baseball

 

The 2018 Division II Player of the Year is the only freshman of the finalists. After a sensational season, he helped Southeastern to a Region XI regular season championship. The lefty finished the season with a 9-2 record. In 76.1 innings, the First-Team All-Region selection struck out 109 batters (3^rd in NJCAA) and had a stellar 1.41 ERA (2^nd in NJCAA). On Feb. 23, Sagedahl threw a perfect game against Lake Land College.

 

In his spare time, Sagedahl was a volunteer coach for the Junior Blackhawks, a Burlington youth select team. He is recognized as a leader by his peers on the team and since gaining notoriety,  has exemplified model behavior on campus and in the community.

 

 

The ICCAC will announce the award winners on Wednesday, May 23.
