SCC Basketball Begins Today

(West Burlington, IA)-The Blackhawks open up the 2019-2020 season hosting The Broadway Classic November 1st and 2nd. SCC will face national runner up Rock Valley College who is pre-season ranked #2 in NJCAA Division III Basketball. The Golden Eagles lost in the NJCAA Division III National Championship last season falling to Herkimer Community College.  New head coach Tyler Bredehoeft takes over as head coach of the Golden Eagles after Tim Sandquist was hired as the new Kirkwood coach. Bredehoeft spent last season as an assistant at Emporia State under former Rock Valley head coach Craig Doty. Rock Valley has won two national championships in the last six seasons. The Golden Eagles won the program's first national title in 2014, beating Caldwell Tech in the title game. Two seasons later the Golden Eagles captured the program's second championship, beating Rochester (MN). SCC will face Rock Valley Friday night at 7 pm.                    

The Blackhawks will face NJCAA Division II pre-season ranked #1 Kirkwood Community College on Saturday.  The Eagles are the defending NJCAA Division II National Champions beating Johnson County Community College of Kansas.  Last seasons national championship was Kirkwood's second in the last four seasons. Tim Sandquist takes over the Eagles program after Bryan Peterson became an assistant coach at South Dakota State. Sandquist spent one season   as the head coach at Rock Valley, leading Rock Valley to the national championship game last season. Sandquist served as an assistant at Dodge City along with current SCC assistant Trent Wolf. Kirkwood returns 10 players of last season's national championship team including Devonte Thedford and Luke Appel who each averaged near 10 points per game last season. Kirkwood has produced five consecutive seasons of 24 wins or more.  Game time against the Eagles is scheduled for 5 pm on Saturday.
