Southeastern Community College Athletics announced Chevis Thompson as Head Coach of Women's Basketball in August 2023.

Thompson comes to Southeastern from Shawnee Community College in Ullin IL, where he has coached for 5 seasons. At Shawnee, Thompson inherited a 2-28 team and transformed them into a consistently winning program, most recently finishing with a 17-9 record this past season. Thompson’s teams have also been focused on academics, as all teams have recorded an average of a 3.0 GPA or higher in the classroom.

“While we certainly didn’t expect to be looking for a head coach this late in the year, my first call was to Coach Thompson,” stated Director of Athletics Peyton Deterding. “He comes with a great aptitude for women’s basketball, the Midwest, and for achieving results in the classroom. He has great experience in turning programs around quickly in every facet. We’re extremely excited to get a coach with his experience to help us take the next steps as a program.”

In total, Thompson holds 15 years of coaching experience, holding positions coaching both men’s and women’s programs at the University of the Southwest, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Jarvis Christian and assistant men’s coach at Frank Phillips College. “I'd like to thank President Ash, AD Peyton Deterding, and the Search Committee for this great opportunity to join Southeastern Iowa Community College staff as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach,” Thompson states. “I bring great leadership skills on and off the basketball court and I’m confident they will translate into many successes. I’m eager to begin this new journey of building a successful program at Southeastern Community College.”

Thompson received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Tennessee Southern University and a master’s degree in sports management from Missouri Baptist University. Thompson competed collegiately at Iowa Lakes Community College and Tennessee Southern University.
