Assistant Coach John McVey is entering his 11th season as the hitting coach for the Blackhawks. After a World Series run in 2023, the Blackhawks ran it back with back to back World Series runs in 2024. The 2024 offense was paced by co-Iowa Community College Athletic Conference hits leaders Cole Smith and Caleb Wulf. The tandem posted an impressive 85 hits each and a .353 average. The all-conference duo was combined with another 4 All Region players to stay in the top 2 of the ICCAC in 7 offensive categories. The Blackhawks continued their run on the national scale coming in second in the nation in hits. The World Series run of 2023 was a special one for the Blackhawk offense. The Blackhawks were second in the nation in run scored, third in the nation in hits, third in the nation in doubles and once again set a national record for hit by pitches with 193. The Blackhawks also led the nation in plate appearances with over 200 more than the next team in the nation and over 500 more than the next ICCAC team.
Individually, the Blackhawks had eight players with over 40 RBI’s including five with over 50 RBI’s. The SCC run scored record was set by Cole Yearsley who crossed the plate 83 times for the Blackhawks. As a team, the Blackhawks broke program record in runs scored, RBI and hit by pitch. In 2022, the offense was paced by five different players having more than 50 RBI’s for the Blackhawks, marking the most in the ICCAC. Along with RBI’s SCC’s offense was ranked in the top 10 in the nation in runs scored, hits, doubles, hit by pitches and six other categories. For the second season in a row the Blackhawks led the nation in hit by pitches with 166, the most in the NJCAA in the last 10 years. The offense set four team records at SCC including hit by pitches, triples, RBI’s and runs scored. Cole Smith and Noel McGarry Doyle set records for walks and hit by pitches respectively. The season in total was a collective effort as 13 players saw over 75 at bats for the season. The 2021 offense was another record setting offense for the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks finished top 15 in the country in hits, runs scored, RBI’s, homeruns and led the country in hit by pitches. The Blackhawks placed six players on the ICCAC All Region team including two on the first team. The Southeastern offense was one of only 12 teams in the nation to average over 8 runs per game. Individual records were set by Lincoln Riley setting the SCC record for runs scored and hit by pitches in a year. Also pacing the offense was Arturo Disla hitting 17 homeruns on route to an All American season.
In a shortened 2020 season, McVey saw a young offense start to show signs of huge potential. Through 16 games, the Blackhawks were hitting .331 and scored over 8 runs per game. The offense was paced by 11 different players hitting over .300 and a walk to hit by pitch ratio of 1.16 walks or hit by pitches to strikeouts. The .331 average was tied for the best batting average in all of the ICCAC (D1 or D2) and lead the ICCAC in 11 different offensive categories including hits, average, OBP, runs and RBI’s. In 2019, the Blackhawks averaged over seven runs per game, making it the 5th year in a row that has occurred. The Blackhawks offense ranked top 20 in five offensive categories including hits, walks and hit by pitches. The offense featured four players on the all region team including two time first team Region XI outfielder, Marcos Sanchez. Four offensive players moved onto the Division 1 level including regional appearance teams, Illinois State and Morehead State. In 2018, the Blackhawk offense continued to be one of the nations finest. The Blackhawks led the ICCAC in basehits and ranked in the top ten in the nation for the same category. The offense had eight different positions represented in the All Region team, 3 First team, 2 Second Team and 3 Honorable Mention. These eight bring McVey’s total All Region offensive players to 23 in his four years at Southeastern. Also during the 2018 season four hitters moved on to the D1 level including Zeb Adreon and Austin Martin moving on to the University of Iowa. In 2016, the Blackhawks won the regular season conference title. Offensively they led the ICCAC in hitting with a .370 batting average in conference play. There were five players chosen to the All-Region team, four of which were position players. Nationally, the Blackhawks continued their streak of being top 30 in batting average and also finished near the top of the nation in hits, runs, doubles and hit by pitches.
In 2015, John oversaw a Blackhawk offense that ranked third in the nation in hits and seventh in the nation in homeruns. This offense featured three hitters that moved on to the Division 1 level and one player move on to the pro ranks. After his playing career, John decided to work for Warner University where he was the Recruiting Coordinator and assistant hitting coach. During the summers of 2013 and 2014, John was the Head Coach for the Yorkton Cardinals of the Western Majors Baseball League. During his two year tenure, the Cardinals were able to set five new hitting records, including hits in a season and doubles in a season. In the summer of 2014, the Cardinals were able to make the playoffs for the first time in five years.
John is a graduate of West Boca Raton High School in Boca Raton, Florida. His senior year he was named 1st team All-County, as well as participating in the Dick Howser All-Star game. After high school, John decided to head to Lake Wales, Florida to play baseball for Warner University. After playing primarily as a pinch hitter and spot starter for the Royals his first two years, he broke out his Junior year. That year, John posted the second highest batting average, home run total, and RBI’s on the team. He then followed up with his senior year, leading the team in home runs and also being 3rd in the conference in home run total. In 2012, John received his Bachelors Degree in History, with a Minor in Psychology from Warner University. In 2013, John received his Masters in Business Administration from Warner University as well. John’s responsibilities with the Blackhawks are to implement the offense and assist in recruiting. He is also the Baseball Sports Information Director and as the Residence Life Coordinator
