SCC Volleyball Sophomore Spotlight

Being a college student is hard already, but adding the athlete after brings even more difficulty. These five volleyball sophomores have proven over the past years how to be a true and committed college student-athlete. Wednesday October 26th, they play their final home game as a Blackhawk vs. #11 Hawkeye Community College. Ayaka Yoshioka (#7) has been with the Blackhawks for two years and has earned many achievements, and broken some records here at SCC. In the 2021 season, Yoshioka earned All-Conference Honorable Mention. Holds the #5 single match dig record for SCC which is 36 digs against John Wood Community College. At the moment, Yoshioka holds the #8 single season dig record with 465 digs,#4 all-time dig record with 734 digs, and #10 in all-time assists with 138. Yoshioka has proven time after time how unstoppable she is in the back row.

Kalyse Whitehead (#12) has been with the Blackhawks for now, the third year making her a "Super Sophomore". Whitehead has brought nothing but positivity and hard work on the court, all three years. Whitehead has exceeded 185 career kills, 103 career digs, 101 career total blocks, and 24 career assists. Whitehead has also broken an SCC record; she is #5 in single season blocks for SCC, 67 total blocks in the 2021 season.

Raevyn Russell (#14) is another "Super Sophomore" here at SCC. Russell has achieved so much in her three years as a Blackhawk. In the 2020 season, Russell earned 2nd Team All-Conference and 2nd Team All-Region XI-B. In the 2021 season, Russell earned 2nd Team All-Region XI-A and 1st Team All Conference. At the moment, Russell holds numerous records here at SCC. #1 in all-time kills with 1136. #1 in all-time attacks with 3071. #2 in all-time blocks with 125. #2 in all-time service aces with 118. #2 in single season record for kills with 488 kills. #4 in the single season record for attacks with 1230. #5 in single season record for blocks with 54. #6 single match kills with 28 kills vs. Joliet Junior College. #7 single match kills with 25 kills vs. Southwestern Illinois College. And Tied for #6 single match service aces with 6 aces vs. Illinois Central College. Russell brings an intensity and hard- working nature to every game.

Kalyssa Fox (#15) has been a Blackhawk for two years. Not only is she a committed student, but she is a committed athlete as well. Earning the captain title in the 2022 season. Fox has broken many records here at SCC; here are some. At the moment, #7 in all time kills with 442. #9 in all-time assists with 179. #6 in all-time blocks with 90. And tied for #6 in single season blocks with 65. Fox is #3 in single match hitting efficiency 0.0684% against William Penn JV. Fox also totaled 45 career service aces and 495 career digs.

Hokulele Horswill-Carroll (#10) or Lele for short, has shown time after time how committed of a student-athlete she truly is. Hokulele may not have gotten the time on the court that she wanted, but she had shown up to every game, becoming the loudest on the sidelines and making her voice known. She is extremely hardworking and not only pushes herself to be the best she can be, but pushes her team everyday to be the best they can be. Volleyball is all about the grit and grind, and Hokulele has it all. Hokulele totals 29 career digs, and a huge ace against William Penn University.
