SCC Splits Weekend Classic

SEDALIA - The Southeastern women's basketball team tipped off their season going 1-1 at the McDonalds Classic in Sedalia, Missouri held at State Fair Community College. Friday night, SCC dropped the season opener 63-53 to host State Fair Community College. Southeastern trailed at the half 32-26 and was outscored in the second half 31-27 in the second half. Southeastern had a great opening day performance by Sanee Cates, who lead all scorers with 20 points. "We learned a lot about ourselves. We saw a lot of great things and we found things we need to work on," said Head Coach Jerry Jerome.

Saturday afternoon, the Blackhawks responded to everything Lincoln Trail College game them. SCC took a 34-30 lead into the break and stuck with the Lady Statesman by matching their 30 point second half. After leading by as much as 10 in the fourth quarter, SCC held on for a 64-60 victory. Saneé Cates lead the team in scoring with 17, Antuanae Garrett added 13, and Tut Braxton and Raevyn Russell had 8 points a piece. "So proud of our team effort today. We started strong, we had great energy coming off the bench, and we showed we can battle to win a ball game," commented Assistant Coach Kelby Homeister. The Blackhawks return home on Tuesday for their home opener against Carl Sandburg College. Pack the stands for the Welcome Back to Basketball game, where fans will celebrate being back in the gym after last year's COVID-19 hiatus. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. in the Cardinal Stritch Gymnasium.
