Blackhawks Drop Conference Match to Northeast

West Burlington, IA-Despite a strong, come-from-behind effort and two players having double-doubles, the Southeastern Blackhawks lost in a 5 set thriller against the Northeast Hawks in Norfolk, Nebraska on Wednesday night (15-25, 12-25, 25-21, 25-20, 11-15). The reigning Region XI-B Champs had a strong two set lead until the Blackhawks came back with a line-up change in the 3rd set. Freshman outside hitter and ICCAC Offensive Athlete of the Week, Rachel Bingham led in kills with 23 and managed 20 digs. Sophomore Rachel Malinowski doubled as both an outside and right-side, ending the series with 17 kills and 23 digs. Freshman setter Jenna Saad led the floor with 40 assists and added 11 digs, while freshman Tori Lasley recorded 3 solo blocks. Freshman libero Melodee Schulte solidly  amassed a whopping 40 digs. "We made too many simple errors in the 5th set against a tough opponent that cost us the game. We played with heart and confidence but came a little off our game in the tiebreaker set," stated second year Head Coach Michelle Glass. "Our defense kept us in the game, but our offense played it a little too safe. We play best as a team when we play aggressively to win.  Tonight, we played not to lose. We will continue to grow and mature as a team with a winning attitude and playing without fear. The Blackhawks are a young team with 6 freshman of their starting 7 players. Overall, the team is quickly developing into a promising crew. The preseason conditioning and hard work has paid dividends as the Lady Blackhawks swept the Region XI-A Champions, nationally ranked No. 9 Kirkwood last week. The Blackhawks next home game is Wednesday September 18 at 7pm vs Iowa Lakes Community College at Loren Walker Arena.
